THE LAURELS

SONOMA, CA

Form, function, and elegance are home essentials.

The Laurels is a 3500 square foot residence in Sonoma, CA. The two-story wood and concrete house is the epitome of simple, modern living with clean lines, open floor plans, and oversized glass panels. The owners requested a minimalistic aesthetic, and so the work consisted of removing several partition walls to create larger asymmetrical spaces. Recycled natural materials were used as much as possible, such as polished concrete floors, reclaimed solid wood stair steps, and folded corrugated metal for the treads. The final product is a sustainable home flooded with natural daylighting and has a great connection to the outdoors.

This project was completed at Enspace in San Francisco, where I served as Principal & Design Director, leading the project from concept to completion.

Project overview

The Laurels is a two-story wood and concrete residence in Sonoma. Its renovation opens the plan by removing partition walls and creates larger living spaces connected to the outdoors through generous glazing. The material palette includes polished concrete floors, reclaimed wood stair steps, and folded corrugated metal. Natural light, clean lines, and a restrained selection of finishes support the owners’ preference for a minimal interior.

Design & project details

Open plan and materials

Removing interior partitions created larger spaces, while reused and natural materials contribute texture to the restrained interior. Oversized glass panels strengthen the connection between the home and its surroundings.
