CHONGQING BAY MASTER PLAN

CHONGQING, CHINA

Landscape, architecture, and people are one.

Awarded first place in the prestigious Chongqing Datian Bay Area International Architecture and Landscape Design Competition, outperforming top architectural firms from around the world.

The project site is in the Yuwan district of Chongqing city in China. It is within the boundaries of Jian Kang road (south), Zhongshan road (east), and Tiwu road (north).

The design components are (1) architectural and landscape masterplan design guidelines, (2) the pedestrian bridge, (3) the cultural main axis (from Cultural Palace to Helong Statue and Datianwan Stadium) landscape, and (4) the skydiving tower park landscape.

The landscape structure is one loop, two axes, three cores, and four districts. One loop: sports track around Datianwan Stadium. Two axes: main axis (urban cultural active axis) and secondary axis (historical landscape axis). Three cores: cultural core (Helong square), landmark core (skydiving tower park), and two-axis interchange core (music fountain). Four districts: pedestrian bridge, central avenue, children’s play area, public square.

This project was completed at Enspace in San Francisco, where I served as Principal & Design Director, leading the project from concept to design documentation. It was a collaborative effort with Moment X in San Francisco for a design competition.

Project overview

The Chongqing Bay master plan connects a pedestrian bridge, cultural axis, public spaces, and skydiving tower park in a civic landscape. The proposal organizes a sports loop around Datianwan Stadium, two cultural and historical axes, three focal points, and four public-space districts. It received first place in an international architecture and landscape design competition. The images show the original competition scheme; the bridge was revised during later development.

Role & contribution

As Principal & Design Director at Enspace, I led architectural design, competition documentation, and presentations in collaboration with Moment X. Following the competition, I continued to lead design development and redesign, including presentations and discussions with government officials. I coordinated the relationship between the bridge, landscape, and public-space components as the proposal evolved.

Design & project details

A connected civic landscape

The proposal links a pedestrian bridge, the cultural axis from the Cultural Palace to Helong Statue and Datianwan Stadium, and the skydiving tower park. Architecture and landscape form a connected sequence of public places.

Organizing the site

A sports loop around the stadium connects an active cultural route and a historical landscape route. Helong Square, the skydiving tower park, and the music-fountain interchange serve as focal points. The bridge, central avenue, children’s play area, and public square form four districts.
