blackhawks practice facility

CHICAGO, IL

A building can remove barriers and make the meeting place fun.

The Blackhawks Practice Facility is a 125,000-square-foot building for Chicago Mission AAA Hockey Club, Chicago Stallions, St. Ignatius College Prep, and the community. The $65-million facility contains with two NHL ice rinks and locker rooms. It also features medical and rehab facilities, a public fitness training center, a media center, a restaurant, a coffee shop, a rooftop deck, classrooms for public school students, and additional space for public functions. Although the Blackhawks and visiting NHL teams will be using the Ice Arena for practice, the facility will be available to the community most of the time. The Arena aims to serve as a youth hub for development and recreational programs.

This project was completed at HOK in Kansas City, where I served as Project Architect, contributing to the design development and construction documents phases.

Project overview

The Blackhawks Practice Facility combines two NHL-size ice rinks with training, medical, rehabilitation, and community spaces. The building supports professional hockey practice alongside youth and public programs. Locker rooms, a fitness center, classrooms, a media center, and hospitality spaces serve the different users. A restaurant, coffee shop, and rooftop deck provide additional places to gather. The facility brings specialist athletic functions and public amenities together within a single building.

Role & contribution

As a Project Architect at HOK, I contributed to design development and construction documents for the original practice facility. My work addressed relationships between specialist sports functions, public use, and supporting amenities within the larger architectural team.
